Tolfrey, 1848
ones was a tackle supplier in London, who made some of the best reels available at the time. His clientele were well travelled and the Guide was almost certainly a publicity exercise by Jones. If it was, it worked beyond his wildest dreams as the book is now one of the most valuable of all angling works. At the time, the Guide gained Jones wide publicity, mainly because of the quality of the colour plates with which the book is illustrated. The text was probably written by Tolfrey, the great sporting journalist of the day, though it has to be said that this wasn't one of his most compelling works. Considering the fact that Tolfrey had never actually been to Norway himself and relied on what he could glean from Jones' customers, it isn't a bad effort.
