 he reel was, in many ways, a small masterpiece of design, with the handle fitted in a counter-sunk bearing, screw (rather than bolted) fittings and of course, an adjustable drag. The 'handle' side of the reel was constructed of three discs, the middle disc fixed as part of the reel frame, the outer and inner revolving together. Although it was initially made of brass, the reel was subsequently to be made of aluminium. It embodied all the features of a modern reel, save for an exposed rim and wide spindle. The feature that made Kelson's reel stand apart from other reels of its day was the efficiency of its drag mechanism. Fully tightened, the Patent Lever could stop a truck, and the smoothness and power of the drag compares very well with modern disk drag reels.
